Clemson should be grateful that Dabo is our Head Coach. IMO Clemson’s Elite future began when Clemson hired Tommy Bowden. TB did not accomplish many of his goals but he cared enough to offer his resignation to TDP after the Wake Forest loss. TB also had some bad luck which coast him wins. I believe the lack of success under TB was not all his fault. Lack of execution by players were partially to blame. Cullen Harper had a really good Junior year but was terrible his Senior year. He and his Dad threw TB under the bus because TB benched Harper who was awful his Senior year. Cullen Harper never measured up to the play of his Junior year.
IMO TB left Dabo a solid foundation from which to build from. Try to remember TB was not provided the near financial resources given to Dabo to hire better coaches, newer facilities and more money to improve recruiting. Dabo and Brad Scott were two of the best hires by TB which helped take the next steps to the CFP.
TB was a very good HC and he smart enough to see the potential in a young Dabo Sweeney. He envisioned what a great future Dabo could have at Clemson given the right tools. Dabo had a unique vision for Clemson. It was new and fresh. It improved recruiting bring in 2 of the best QB’s to ever play at Clemson, along with several great skilll players and BV as DC.
Things did not work out the way Tommy Bowden envisioned at Clemson. But keep this in mind. When TB was hired The BOT and the administration did not invest into our program as they did when Dabo was hired as the HC.
IMO TB accomplished a lot with the resources he had. He was smart enough to hire some good people like Brad Scott, and Dabo Sweeney. Most of all TB loved Clemson enough to step away and recommend Dabo as the next HC.
TB owned the coots, and won some big games as Clemson’s Head Coach. He ran a clean program and left Dabo with a solid foundation to build from. IMO TB does not get enough credit for his accomplishments ans Clemson’s HC or for his love for Clemson.
Had TB been given more financial resources when he was the HC at Clemson I Believe he would have accomplished more. TB may have had more wins, ACC championships and more….
If you look at the program since TB and Dabo have been the head coaches, Clemson has been a clean program, graduating players, turning boys into good solid men who have represented our University very well. You can use the words like integrity, respect, character, determination, discipline, pride, commitment and many more words related to running a clean quality program.
Being the Head Coach of a high profile team like Clemson is a pressure cooker everyday. No matter how much money you make. Try to remember everything a College Football Coach has to deal with every single season before you blame him for a few losses. If it were easy a lot of fans would be HC’s in HS or College.
I would not want to be the head coach replacing Nick Saban !!!

Wait, I thought Bowen was fired and collected a ton of money on his buyout.

Maybe I'm wrong but I seem to remember Bowden interviewing for the Arkansas job, I think it was Arky, maybe another. TDP gave him an contract extension which included an extension of his buyout. Maybe I'm misinformed or just making this up. You make me doubt what I think I know.
Anyway, when I got to the part where you graced Bowden with a virtue I just quit reading.
Set me straight on this, please.

I never said TB did not have flaws. Maybe he did use Arkansas to get a contract extension. Have you Ever done something similar to keep your job or to get a raise.
I bet most every adult has used that ploy at least once in their lives. I have and do not see anything wrong with it. What do you need to be set straight on ???
Every coach probably has done. Even the great walk on water Nick Saban.
How does it change to contents of my post ???

Why feel sorry for Deboer? Even if they run him off in a few years, he’s a millionaire.

I would not want to be the HC to follow Saban. And Mean that. In Bama’s eyes big shoes to feel. I don’t think Bama fans will give him a long leash.
I don’t remember saying I felt sorry for Saban’s replacement.

a heftier one when he leaves there.
He may not succeed, but of all the candidates, I think they picked the one with the best CHANCE to succeed. Getting Washington to the Natty Championship game in only two years was a big accomplishment. He has won, and won quickly, everywhere he has been. The only thing that may do him in at Bammer is the obviously most unreasonable of expectations, which is, play for the Natty EVERY year, and win it at least half the time.

I kept reading, looking for the part where Bama had angered the football gods and now vengeance would be theirs.

Hurl a real insult. Something about Kirby cheating or a play on "UGay." A veiled "why are you here" is unworthy of you. I've seen your work. You're better than this

I've got to agree with the UGay poster, that was a pretty weak retort, 2000.***

I didn't get that far. He lost me when he spelled Dabo's last name wrong.

I think it it is titled wrong. Should be "How Tommy Bowden made Clemson what it is Today." And the subtitle should have been "The increase in financial investment under Coach CDS made all the difference."

Or it could be called Gods Plan for both men! Fate as one might say. Karma not so much.

Does it ever work out when a coach is hired who has only coached at the previous school for a year or two? Just seems like the job hopping coaches end up a bust. Willie Taggert and Chad Morris come to mind…
