One more thought on the Charleston tragedy...
Jun 19, 2015, 10:33 AM
|
|
Feel free to ignore if you're just plain overwhelmed by it all. But I'll just toss this into the Charleston tragedy salad, then get back to watering the tomatoes...
I read a post earlier on a friend's FB page from someone I don't know who said after yesterday they refused to help an elderly gentleman who was clearly having trouble getting into their car in the heat because "his car had a Confederate flag plate."
Folks, the day you deny aid to someone because they have a rebel flag, or an Obama sticker, or rainbow sticker a Star of David ... or, Lord help me, a Gamecock flag ... on their car is the day you need to stop and look deep in your own heart. You want to end the divide in America? It starts with you. It starts with me.
It starts where you know deep inside it needs to start.
That spot is different for all of us, but it is somewhere inside. It's a moving target that only you and God know about. And only you and God can change. Don't wait for the government or the church or that other guy with the American flag decal on his windshield and the Tiger paw on his tag. This one starts in the mirror.
The day you refuse to help someone is the day you can say you chose to keep the chasm open. And you forfeit your right to complain about the way things are.

to stop it or witness it & move on.
Continuing to type about it is just reminding people of it.
Let it go.
No amount of faith is going to make you able to stop it.
You must become smart enough to stop it.
You won't and that's the end of the story.

Yes it will. The question facing all of us ...
Jun 19, 2015, 11:01 AM
|
|
Do we help stop and kick it into the gutter? Do we just walk around it, since it must be someone else's job to clean it up?
Or do we subltly add to the pile by uncaring action ... or inaction.
When you do what you can, you have done what you could, as my friend the Spinx says.

questions.
My question to you is when are you going to stop acting like you're better than anybody else?
What, HONESTLY, is the REAL difference between you and any other anything?
Nothing.
We're all the same.
You weren't born bulletproof, therefore, in LOGICAL TERMS, you are NOT better than me or anybody else.
Your act is almost entertaining to everybody, however.
Almost.

while it's hilarious to me, it's like 96% purple which is, ironically, way too much purple. Especially by Clemson supporters.
The irony is that this board is usually all like, "Orange Life! All Orange! Solid Orange! Orange & White!", but, like, the baseball uniforms are a lot of purple. Which I don't necessarily understand.
So, yeah, that's kind of ironic, isn't it??

The man who talks about how he'd like things to be
Jun 19, 2015, 11:25 AM
[ in reply to Maybe the problem is is that all you really have is ] |

Is not elevating himself above other folks.
I firmly believe 2 things on this:
1) We will NEVER be able to remove strife and violence from our society as humans are flawed creatures who, for a myriad of reasons, lash out at things which they hate, fear, or intrinsically do not understand.
-and-
2) Item #1 does not, in any way, alleviate us of our responsibilities as human to try and address as many of those views as we can. I don't understand the view that it is not part of our responsibilities as humans to discuss this and figure out how individually we can try and advance us as a whole. To that end I see nothing wrong with repeated calls to reevaluate your views on interacting with others.
And both of those are doubly true for folks claim to follow the gospel of Grace.

see how well your smarts stop a bullet
also it will all end one day. the hate, the murder, the racism. it will all end when Christ returns. you don't have to believe that, but that's what I believe. and if i'm wrong then well i'm wrong. but if you're wrong, well then.

Do you really think education or the lack thereof is the problem? Have we not realized yet no amount of education can cure this world?

I've read your post several times Rev, but there is one ...
Jun 19, 2015, 12:58 PM
|
|
... aspect that I am not sure you conveyed. How can you heal the divide without confronting that which contributes to the divide?
You mention helping someone regardless of what stickers or license plates they have on their car and I agree wholeheartedly with that. Regardless of a person's ideology or whether their views are inline with yours or not, I agree that helping them in their time of need is clearly the right thing to do and will contribute to healing the divide between you.
But will that help that person see you as no different from them (or you from them for that matter)?
There is an aspect in our society to fear and hate "the other" and it seems to be very ingrained in our society (and, sadly, it seems to be a bit more ingrained in the South).
Perhaps it is in human nature. We are a tribal species, perhaps we have not moved past our tribal instinct to band together and see another "tribe" as a threat. I am not a social psychologist or anthropologist, so I would quickly get into the weeds and not have a clue what I am talking about in this regard, so I won't fein to know much of anything regarding our evolutionary past and how it may shape our societal interactions.
But, we have a problem with "the other" and far too many of us seem to find denigrating "the other" far more satisfying and safe than trying to breach the gap between us and understand each other.
Perhaps it is just intolerance, perhaps it is societal upbringing (it might even be something as banal as the "fight or flight" basic instinct of man).
Regardless it is a problem that eventually manifests itself into events like Wednesday evening in Charleston.
And we have to find a way to overcome it if we want our society to survive.

In truth, we cannot "make" someone a better person ...
Jun 19, 2015, 6:01 PM
|
|
...but we can prevent them from making us worse.
Paul called it "heaping coals of fire on your enemy's head." A person who has reason to doubt what they always knew to be true is far easier to at least meet in the middle than one who has fuel to fire his rage.

One shows support for a duly elected president of the United States. One is a big rednecked middle finger to three-quarters of the rest of us who are tired of having to deal with this slop. If you want to fly that flag on your automobile, more power to you. Don't be surprised if other people start treating you like scum of the earth.
