The decline of Saban

We broke Nick Saban in the National Championship game last year.
The cracks have been building in the armor of Saban and we knocked a big chunk out of the facade last year. Saban looked old , tired and confused during last year’s National Championship Game.
Saban’s record as a coach is legendary over a very long period of time, but Saban himself contributed to his own demise as much as any of Alabama’s opponents. Saban got to the level he did by out recruiting and out coaching the opposition. I know this is earth shattering info that a team that out recruits and out coaches the opposition will probably be successful, but hear me out on this. Saban has led his football programs like a dictator who doesn’t trust the people around him to do things exactly the way he would do it. He is involved in all aspects of the operation and this will wear you out mentally as well as physically when you feel you have to oversee every little thing. Saban has done this for a very long time and he has done extremely well at it for a long time.
Saban is not a young man and the grind of this year round regiment is starting to show. The talking heads love to talk about all the coaching talent that cut their coaching teeth under the tutelage of Saint Nick, but there comes a point where this is not a plus, but a negative. These coaches look at coaching at Alabama under Saban as a means to an end that if they can endure it, will look really nice on the old resume for their next coaching gig.
This is where Dabos’s model for success at Clemson differs from Saban. We are blessed to have a coach like Dabo who has the same passion, drive and fire as Saban, but the big difference is that coaches want to work with Dabo and actually enjoy working WITH Dabo. Dabo is a competitor to the core and he always has a plan and a vision and the coaches work extremely hard toward his vision out of respect for the man and they are part of the vision. Dabo is in tune with all things Clemson football, but he trust his coaches to do their job and has enough respect for them to let them do their job.
Recruiting is the life blood of a successful football program, but Dabo has shown that continuity of the coaching staff is also an extremely important to the success of our Clemson Tigers. Dabo is a leader not a dictator and that bodes well for a very long lasting run of success.

On the sideline today he looked about 10 years older than he did at the start of the season

Well said..Saban is a very good man & equal coach but his over-seeing every aspect..

for umpteen long grueling years has taken its grip on him.
I admire him & wish him well & more years of coaching but Dabo probably is now the King of the coaching ranks..
but I see him getting upset on the sidelines more each year which is worrisome.

funny how people around college football acting like the sky is falling

because Bama went 10-2 and will get left out of the playoffs. They’ll probably win their Bowl game (Sugar Bowl???) and still be pissed at their season. It’s incredible.

Yeah really. A bad season for Alabama would be considered a dream season for most teams in college football.

I agree with all you said about Dabo and his recipe for success, but let's pump the brakes on the "End of Saban" narrative. He's still recruiting lights out and he lost his incredible QB going into the game tonight. Even without Tua, they still almost won. Bama ain't going anywhere, and Saban hasn't slipped.

Yeah you are exactly right. I don’t thing Saban is going to call it quits or anything, I just think that they have been a dynasty for such a long time with really no noticeable weakness it’s usual to see them lose (except to Clemson). I have just noticed how Saban has been looking older and he did look out of sorts in the National Championship game last year. It’s amazing that he has been able to stay at that level for the length of time that he has with Saban himself being pretty much the only common denominator over that period.

That’s fair.
I still see some slipping in Alabama. They have been on the mountain top of College football for such a long time, it’s unusual to think of CFP without them in it. They have had a lot of injuries and the loss of Tua is a tremendous loss. The difference is in years past they seem to have absorbed those injuries much more efficiently to the point that you wondered why the second string player wasn’t playing in the first place. It seemed like a starter would go down or not be playing up to the level they should and Saban would insert another player with little or no drop of in talent.(Tua for example).
. One of Sabans strengths is not only being able to bring in 5star talent, but being able to getting them to perform at that 5 star level. This is where you separate the Nick Sabans from the Kirby Smarts. Georgia brings in as much or more 5 star talent, but just doesn’t consistently get that 5 star performance out of their talent.
I don’t think Alabama is going away and in a free fall, I just think that there are some signs their status of being the greatest college football team ever, each year is not going to continue. In my opinion it’s due to Sabans coaching with an “Iron Fist” year after year will eventually catch up with him. It may be in a year or it may be ten, who knows? This year I didn’t think Alabama looked like the usual Bama we have come to know.

I don't fault Nick Saban for how he runs his program. The guy is the greatest CF coach of all time. His run of success at Alabama is ridiculous. Saying he should have done things differently seems very silly and petty. Believe me, I say this as someone enjoying Alabama's decline as much as anyone. I understand the misguided urge to kick dirt on him.
Saban is a micro-manager, especially on defense. He has been brilliant, smarter than everyone else. But with his advancing age, he can't continue like this.
The injuries they suffered at LB prior to the season, along with Tua going down were just too much to overcome.
The real test for their program is next year. Will they return to form and steamroll the SEC or not? The 2020 recruiting class is all-world once again but QB play is the biggest factor IMO.
Don't count ole Nick out just yet. This might be his last hurrah but don't count on it yet.

He will pay Chump a ridiculous salary after the coots fire him and Tanner to come coach his defense and Sark has the offense rolling, I wouldn't throw dirt on him just yet.

This post garners an early mailing of the 1000 point level steak knives (Crump!) and an immediate nomination for POTY. Great work McV.

as in three years from now he will "retire" but decide to take a job at the coots a year later under some guargantuan contract and he goes 4-8 every year for 3 years before walking away with a huge buyout.
