Does anyone else blame the coaching for these close games that we always seem to fall short in?

I agree that coaches are ultimately responsible for the outcome. In crunch time, our players either panic and don’t execute properly, they become careless, or they become complacent with a lead.
We’ve seen two recent examples of poor execution. In the final seconds against Virginia, Chase should have taken his best shot even if it was a 10 foot jumper, but no way should Clark have been the trailing player who got the dish off for the final shot. Against NC State, Chase drove the lane and two players were in position for a tip in. All missed. But if you go back and look at the tape, Chase had Ian right there open for a dish, dunk, and win. He chose to try a contested layup.
We’ve shown carelessness in the final minutes and seconds by making soft, lazy passes. And I saw one pass in the paint under the basket behind the back in traffic that resulted in a turnover when we had the lead late. We lost the game (Virginia I think). Inexcusable.
An example of complacency occurred with an 8 point lead against Georgia Tech when PJ fouled a 3 point shooter with about 90 seconds to go. He just shrugged his shoulders like “no problem, we got this in the bag.” Except it ignited a comeback by GT to send it into OT.
These are player issues, but they occur over and over and over. That makes it a coaching issue. The coach has to get them under control. I’m not trying to bash Brad or the team. He’s our coach until he’s not, and I will support him and the team as long as he is. I just pointed out what I’ve seen as issues that need to be addressed.
All that said, I think 3 more wins (and I hope for more) including in the ACCT gets us a NCAAT bid. If we can solve our end game issues, we can do some damage there.
One more thing I think needs to change: We should have a dominant inside game with a couple of good 3 point shooters for an occasional 3. For some reason, we tend to abandon the inside game and just let the 3’s rain from everybody. All God’s chillun’ shoot the 3’s. That’s not our game! Please change that.

And some yet another crappy Gen Z tune is playing on the PA. Got to get these guys to play till the end. If your ahead by 8 with less than 2 minutes to play and you lose, thats pitiful.

Coaching, coaching, coaching. Poor coaching. How do you allow the ball to be inbounded with so little difficulty and in the hands of the player who has torched you for 25 points? What did Brownelll tell the team during that timeout? Pay loose? Don’t foul? Find a way to lose? Coaching, coaching, coaching. We don’t have a good one.

We don’t seem to be able to slow or stop a really hot shooter on teams that are behind and playing desperate. Guys like Horne at NCSU or Hinson at Pitt or Jones at Memphis. Gotta play shutdown / smother like UVA does.

Brad Brownell sounds more like a commentator evaulating a loss, not a coach.

And therein lies the problem. I really don't think he HAS any answers for what goes wrong late in a game, early in a game, or any other time. As I said previously in another post, he puts together a team, they practice together, and then whatever happens on gameday happens, he has little to no input or control of it. The team wins, the team loses, and he just watches.

Yeah, NC State was a must win, at home. Recovering is now difficult. The GA Tech game doesn’t especially matter very much. They will have to win their way in to the NCAA tournament. It was a given if they won. For twenty years, Clemson Men’s basketball always has faded in the stretch. For this reason, they won’t be rewarded by the selection committee.

Always the player or refs. Never the coaching. Throw yourself under the bus CBB! Find a team in the mid majors and I’ll hold the door so it doesn’t hit you on the way out.

NC State was not a must win. It was a highly disappointing loss, especially because we had it won until we gave it away, but it did not derail our tournament chances. Three more wins and we’re in.
Now it probably did cost us a double bye in the ACCT. And I’ll be surprised if we are a 5 seed in the NCAAT unless we win out in the regular season and maybe win a game in the ACCT. Probably more like 11 or 12 seed.
