Turning the page playoffs next year
Jan 3, 2024, 9:19 AM
|
|
Hadn’t really looked at how the playoffs will work next year. Just took a look and while I am excited college football will be around until Jan 20 next year, it does seem foreign.
For those that want the cliff notes:
12 teams.
6 conference champs auto bid.
There are four rounds; called: first round, quarterfinals, semifinals, national championship.
Top 4 conference champs get a bye first round
The 5th and 6th conference champ face each other in the first round
The remaining 7-12 face each other with the highest seed determining the home field. (Interestingly they don’t have to pick their home stadium)
Quarterfinals (8 teams, 4 games) are “bowl games”, rotate each year; 1 plays winner of 5vs6, 2 plays 7vs12, 3 plays 8vs11, 4 plays 9vs10. (No reseeding after 1st round)
Semis is 4 winners of quarterfinals, home of bowl games that rotates too.
National championship is the semi winners on January 20 at a stadium that bid and won.

Big take aways

Conference champs 5 and 6 have a tough road. Much rather be first at large team.
Home field in the first round will be fun to watch and will definitely lead to better attendance
This is going to be a long season, teams will really be different than the teams that started in August.
Make no mistake this system still favors the big teams and conferences. Curiously I saw no mention of notre dame exception. This means they can never get a first round bye, maybe I missed that somewhere? Would not break my heart..

Notre Dame agreed to this plan knowing they will never get a bye. They are banking on being 5 through 8 and getting an extra home game. Also this plan gives them a 13th game since they don’t play in a conference championship game. This is per Jack Swarbuck. Also, with the pac 12 now being the pac 2, the automatic bid is shrinking from 6 to 5.

First time I've seen this. Just curious what's your source?
Like someone else said it would be better to be an at large team rather than the 5th or 6th conference champ?
Btw, what is the 6th conference?
I'm excited for the playoffs but not a fan of this format as we are still going to have to deal with a ranking system and the bias that goes along with it.

Playing the playoff games on Thu, Fri, and Mon night is Dumb af

CFB is meant for Saturdays. Once you get past the new year holiday the games shoudl be on Saturday.
There is ample room to put them on Sat, just get the NFL to play earlier time slots or keep their shyte on Sunday.

Lol. "Get the NFL"...
NFL games are EXTREMELY popular. They are not going to move them to accommodate the NCAA.

only the top 5 conf champs are in...no conf has an auto bid. Conf must have min 8 teams to eligible, so as of now Pac 12 champ will not be eligible for the CFP.
Also seems unfair to the top 4 teams because they will miss out on the revenue of an additional home game, unless they are doing some type of revenue sharing among all games. .

What do you mean no conference has an auto bid? 4 conferences do: ACC, BIG10, BIG12, SEC.

No they don't. The 5 highest conference champions get an automatic bid. Those spots aren't reserved for specific conferences. It's just whoever the 5 highest rated conference chdmps are.

Ahh I see...a technicality. As long as the current model exists, the 5 highest rated conference champs will always include the 4 P5 conferences.
The rule is written the way it is to ensure a non-P5 always makes it in.

All you really need to know about the playoffs is that technically it should be called the SEC invitational. The two SEC teams that play in their championship game will be in. That's automatic ESECPN wouldn't have it any other way. These are the teams they more than likely will have in it next year. Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma. Out of the Big 10 they would love to have Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, and USC. This would be the perfect scenario for the networks and their idiotic commentators. That leaves one spot open for who? So a lot of schools can prepare to be mad at this new format.

Seems like 5th and 6th should play 11 and 12 in first round, not each other.

All of the games should be played at the school's home stadiums like the NFL does it. That would be some great environments.

realize. There will be so many regular season games late in the year that will still have playoff ramifications.
I wish the there was home field for the quarterfinals as well because it will actually be a bit bittersweet for the teams 1-4 to not get to host a playoff game. Especially if they get shipped somewhere across the country.
