Don't like to see injuries but that big hit put him out of the game. Good move by Wake's coach to take him out to prevent a serious injury on their starting QB.

I expect great things from LaVonta Bentley. That kid was a monster in H.S. Can't wait till he has BV's playbook down & gets alot of playing time.

Huge Bentley fan. Also, did anyone see Spector pancake a WF OLineman? Unbelievable.

Targeting?
Sep 14, 2020, 7:34 AM
|
|
I remember the announcers saying, during the game, "That looked like targeting." Didn't see a replay. But, just watched it several times on this post.
I'm trying not to be biased here, but Wake fans would accuse me of it anyway. It seems clear to me that it was the QB, not the LB, that lowered his head just before impact and it was the QB who made contact with the crown of his helmet, not the LB.
Now, getting on my soapbox about the targeting call: The targeting call is supposed to get players to "keep your head up" and "see what you are hitting." Players are told to "lower your shoulder" or "lead with your shoulder."
There is no way that I believe that the Wake QB was intentionally leading with the crown of his helmet. He was instinctively dropping his shoulder and preparing to take a hit. He made a "self protection" move, not an aggressive move to hit the LB.
But, technically, the QB was guilty of targeting. The rule doesn't distinguish between offense and defense. The rule says if you initiate contact with the crown of your helmet, offensive or defensive, you are guilty of targeting. The facts are the rule is never called against an offensive player.
Now, here is my problem: When a player - offensive or defensive - "leads with his shoulder" his head automatically drops. I dare anyone to show me how to tackle somebody with these two things happening without dropping his head: 1. Lead with your shoulder. 2. Wrap the ball carrier up when you make contact.
It is inevitable that when a defender leads with his shoulder that based on what the ball carrier is doing, which is probably the same thing, initial contact is going to be made with the crown of the helmet. And, when the ball carrier is a RB, or QB, breaking through the line of scrimmage and is being met by a LB, more often than not it is the offensive player who makes the contact with the crown of his helmet.

Of the portions of games I watched Saturday I didn’t see a single targeting call or replay review to find targeting. Seems like maybe a little de emphasis because last year probably around 5 plays would have been called and then reviewed.

Good points about targeting. The league has good intentions with the rule, but its enforcement is far from consistent. Several minutes later, they showed another replay (another angle I assume), but didn't get a good look as I was not expecting it.

Meh...not as vicious as some has made it out to be...
I’m more personally impressed with form tackling.

when he hits something, it's going to stop and most likely go backward.

It was a great hit, but I was way more worried about the QB's knee when he got folded backwards.

Textbook tackle. He put his face mask right in the QB's chest ...... not the crown of his helmet.

I said it L.Y. Lavonta Bentley

L. Bentley was my most anticipated freshman to watch out of last years class period! Not just defense: "all around"! He has a nasty-ness to him and the coaches indicate he wants to be coached hard. As suggested when he gets Coach V's playbook down - watch out!
