Went into deer woods at 97 degrees
Sep 22, 2022, 8:16 PM

on September 22 with no wind and forecast saying no chance of rain for 7 days- got in my stand & 20 minutes later,,,,, downpour and lots of wind- at least the temp dropped to 88 degrees and I was drenched with clean cool water instead of sweat. Temp Saturday morning supposed to be 49 so I guess Summer really was here today & gone tomorrow.

This is my first “Fall” in retirement. Was looking forward to a lot of time in the woods. I had rotator cuff surgery two weeks ago. Doc said it would be at least six months before I get to pull a trigger. Oh well, maybe next year. Oh wait, that sounds like something the coots used to say….lol. Anyways, hope you bag a few this year.

4 bucks, a couple of does and 2 huge hogs- put a crossbow bolt into one of the hogs and passed on a couple of easy shots on small deer - had a 4/ pointer come so close this morning that I was looking straight down at him

Were you hunting? It would be bad enough to sit there in that heat

But I wouldn’t want to mess with a deer I killed at 97. I typically clean my own but that would be a bit much

a little before I might see a deer and was by myself & could go straight to the processor who wouldn’t have many deer to dress out in archery session- especially as you said, not many people hunting in the heat

Supposed to cool a little bit next week. Ams are cooler but yeah I’d have to throw it in the back of the truck and take it to the processor too.

Hot or not, time spent in the woods is way better than time working. We’ve been so busy this year moving and remodeling our house I haven’t stopped to even think much about hunting until last week when I spent 2 days in the woods (for my job) bush-hogging for a hunting club outside of Enoree. Cutting some fields and shooting lanes for them got me pumped and ready to put some meat in the freezer this season. Good luck to you clover.

Nice. I won’t shoot any buck less than an 8. And I usually don’t shoot does until after the rut so this time of year I spend a lot of time watching and enjoying the wildlife. I did get an 8 point on October 10 last year with my crossbow on the last day of archery. Nothing beats sitting in the woods in the morning while the world wakes up.

I am beginning to have doubts

about a “rut” as defined/ have seen 2 fawns with spots along roads and had 2 bucks following a doe last week. Last year we had bucks chasing does the 1st week of October. And I usually try to get a doe for the freezer as soon as possible- wastes a bucks energy to impregnate a doe that I shoot after the rut

Yea - I just look at that doe as the best buck bait I can use until the rut.
